Forensic Behavioral Profiling

CHARACTERISTIC IDENTIFYING TRACES

The use of Forensic Behavioral Profilers by law enforcement agencies has long been a part of law enforcement and identification of perpetrators. In recent years this highly specialised investigation technique has entered the public awareness largely through the proliferation of television shows. The flow on of this awareness is the immense advantage to be gained by being able to more closely define the characteristics of persons, speech, written text, actions and threats made by unknown individuals and organisations.

The value of being able to eliminate and narrow a field of suspects cannot be underestimated. There are many famous cases where Forensic Behavioral Profiling has led to savings in respect of time and costs by bringing about a swift arrest or in the case of a ransom and kidnapping, the saving of lives and large sums of money.

The field of Forensic Behavioral Profiling is a very narrow one in terms of resources. There are very few of these qualified persons in the private sector and the majority of these have come from law enforcement backgrounds. These specialists are very much sought after in the private sector as it becomes more and more apparent that humans not only have genetic links via DNA but also characteristic links to certain actions and pre dispositions such as criminal, pathological and psychopathic traits. These are rather like fingerprints albeit they are not as visible except to a trained expert.

There are tried and proven ways to detect many of these characteristics traits and traces and these are most valuable when undertaking an investigation in which the circumstances suggest a considerable number of possible suspects.

Lyonswood Investigations and Forensic Group has a strategic alliance with a well known and extremely well qualified former Police Forensic Behavioral Profiler who is now undertaking this specialised investigation work in the private sector. This Forensic Behavioral Profiler is one of just a few who have the expertise, qualifications and history of success in this Behavioral science field.

Some of the most common investigations that often benefit from a skilled Forensic Behavioral Profile are listed below:

Threatening and defaming letters / e-mails

With the increased usage of the Internet, convenience of communication via e-mails and the anonymity that the Internet seems to afford perpetrators, the incidence of Internet crime in this particular area is on the increase. We receive calls every day related to defamation and threats and often are unable to identify those responsible as they have utilised proxy servers to transmit these threats and defamatory remarks to commit these crimes.

However, our clients often have a suspect or a few suspects and with some clever forensic Behavioral profiling many of the perpetrator’s characteristics can be identified. Sometimes it’s the very language they use or perhaps the expressions, mistakes, font, the manner in which phrases are couched or comparisons made to other communications that are known to be from the suspects that allow for this identification.

Theft in the workplace

Theft in the workplace is commonplace. Often there are well-recognised motives for this theft that can be identified and linked to certain employees through cleverly designed forensic Behavioral profile questionnaires and other profiling techniques.

Kidnap & Ransom

These matters are very serious and often not solved without clever expert forensic Behavioral profiling. Often certain key words, text formats, the way in which a ransom is expected to be delivered, the language of the threat, deliberate mistakes and the reason behind the ransom/kidnap all have very distinctive characteristic identifiers.

Product tamper / Extortion

Most of us have seen in the media the devastation caused by a threat to damage, pollute, poison or otherwise physically harm consumers, manufacturers or retailers of products. The financial viability of a company / manufacturer / wholesaler can be severely affected by the mere threat or in extreme cases the collateral damage where the threats are actually carried out.

The reasons behind these threats are many fold and mostly concern financial gain, the destruction of a competitor or someone with a psychiatric condition. Some of the perpetrators even make themselves a victim of the threats to cover their being discovered.

One famous case involved a husband and wife who actually alleged they were victims of a threat to poison a product through allegedly purchasing and consuming the product. In their attempts to extort and keep their identity protected, they actually purchased the tampered product and consumed a small dose of the poison used in the threat to enforce their claims both as victims and extortionists. Forensic Behavioral profiling in this matter assisted in bringing about a speedy resolution and conviction.

Malicious damage

People who damage the property of others generally do so out of hatred, avarice or revenge. All of these traits have distinct patterns and often key forensic Behavioral profile indicators can be identified and linked to the person responsible.

Arson

The worst cases involving an arsonist involve the loss of life and property. Many of these persons have psychological/psychiatric conditions. Many are involved in volunteer organisations and either known to the victims or they themselves are familiar with the victims. Certain characteristic traces can be forensically correlated with these happenings and swift analysis can often bring about early arrests.
